Ready Player One Audiobook + Digital Book Included
Product Review (submitted on September 3, 2018):
This book was such a delightful surprise. A colleague mentioned it in passing, so I borrowed it from the local digital library. From the very first page -- nay, from the very first paragraph -- I was hooked. This is a book I quite literally could not put down.
Before I even finished my first read-through, I purchased a "real" copy online, because I already knew I'd want to read it again when my digital checkout expired.
I, too, experienced many of my formative years in the eighties, so most of the 80s references I "got" immediately. Some of the more obscure asides required a Google lookup, but most were crystal clear.
What I loved especially about this book -- besides the nonstop action -- was witnessing an underdog's maturation and his realignment of priorities. Although this story is endless fun, it's also one that makes you think about it long after the book has been shelved. I found myself tying characters from Ready Player One to people I know in real life.
I considered how shockingly accurate some of Cline's predictions (the book was published in 2011) have been. Finishing my fourth read with Hurricane Harvey just past and Hurricane Irma ready to hit Florida -- and viewing photos of the subsequent lines to buy fuel -- has brought home how remarkably prescient Ernest Cline has been in his visualization of 2041 and its challenges.
I enjoyed this book so much that I purchased the Kindle version as well as a physical paper copy, so I can lend it out but still have it nearby for yet another read.
