Although the book is a tad too long and digesses in WWII history for a bit too long, as well, it's a fine bit of work that sustains interest throughout. Unlike a lot of those who previously reviewed this book here I had no trouble getting through the 17.5 hours of listening without problem at all. In a Shakespearean sort of way, this book is a tragedy, a continuing descent into a set of problems the characters have to live through, suffer through and finally live with as the book comes to its very troubling and surprising ending. I'd never re-read it but i'm glad I had the chance to plow avidly through it this once.
This tale is expertly written and riveting. I think it’s the best he’s done but all of his stories are fabulous and beautifully told. He is the quintessential author of our age. It is a great love story and an historical account of our brave soldiers in a most difficult and horrible situation during WWII. A MUST READ!!!!!
Fantastic book! Narrator Michael Beck was outstanding! His portrayal of all the characters was superb. I felt every emotion each character was feeling in the book due to his spot on narration. This is one book that I'm glad I listened to instead of read on my own, because Michael Beck brought every word to life. The story had many levels, and each one was captivating. This should be made into a movie. 5+ stars!!
